The Welsh Terrier Leads the Way
by
Bardi McLennan

(ISBN:0-944875-38-6 )

Hardcover, 6x9, 320 pages, 175 b&w photos and illustrations, bibliography, index, and glossary.

The Welsh Terrier is a unique dog that has its roots and history in the people and land of Wales. Although there was a brief attempt by the English to name it the Old English Broken Haired Black and Tan Terrier, the Wales contingent won the day.

The Welsh Terrier is an intelligent, dog, averaging 15 1/2 inches at the shoulder. It was originally bred to "go to ground," meaning that it would pursue the fox or badger or whatever other game into the ground (it's lair). They were also used in fox hunts; the hounds would chase the fox back to its lair, and then the hunters would send the Welsh Terrier down after the fox.

Welsh Terriers are fierce hunters. They excell at "earth dog trials," which are competitions for dogs in which they compete to find a prey (safely caged) in a man-made "earth."

Welsh Terriers have a unique personality. They're intelligent and often independent, which can make them a unique challenge when it comes to obedience training. Once they've mastered a "trick" or technique and have demonstrated their capability, they see little value in repeatedly performing it over and over. Therefore food is always a good motivator, since the immediate reward is something that gives value to the repetition.

According to the AKC (American Kennel Club) Standard, the Welsh Terrier has the following temperament: "The Welsh Terrier is a game dog--alert, aware, spirited--but at the same time, is friendly and shows self control. Intelligence and deisre to please are evident in his attitude. A specimen exhibiting an overly aggressive attitude, or shyness, should be penalized."
