A Review of The Newfoundland

Here at Doral Publishing, we are immensely proud of all of our dog books. Many of our books have been nominated for best book of the year by the prestigious Dog Writer's Association of America. We believe in publishing high-quality dog books that are both artistic and intelligently written. We believe that we have put out a fine book, but here is your chance to hear what others think about our book.

This review is from Book Reviews," a monthly column by Patricia Bennett Hoffman in
The Northeast Canine Companion.

An unusual and fascinating breed study is THE NEWFOUNDLAND, by Emmy Bruno. Originally written in Italian, it has been ably translated by Louis Palmisano, MD. Its author, a long time breeder, judge, and veterinarian, has produced an admirable book, whose interest is by no means limited to the breed in Europe.

In its 180 large pages there is a wealth of useful information. Dr.. Bruno begins with a well-researched history of the Newfoundland, with an analysis of its relation to other large breeds. This section also gives accounts of the breed in many countries (including the USA) width mention of important kennels worldwide.

Chapter Two presents standards of the breed:

the 1996 FCI standard, which is used in most of the world; the American, the British, and the Canadian. This is followed by "Comments regarding the Standards," some 40 pages devoted to type and structure, splendidly illustrated with photographs and drawings. A full chapter is devoted to "Movement," and even includes an underwater photo of the dog swimming.

Character, problems, and genetics are given full attention. "Training" discusses essentials such as obedience, house training and so forth, but most interesting is the part on working the Newfoundland in water-rescue and retrieving. The Italian breed club sponsors water trials, and their scoring system is shown.

This very informative and unusual book concludes with a short history of the "Club Italiano del Terra-nova" [The Italian Newfoundland Club]. There is also a Glossary, a list of breed clubs worldwide, a bibliography (several languages), and a good Index. For those seriously interested in the Newfoundland, this book is very highly recommended.
